Short History of the dishes:

Dik Dik Vietnam coffee

This coffee is called as Ca Phe Da in Vietnamese,

which means ice coffee.

In Vietnam, this coffee is being made from ground Vietnamese-grown dark roast coffee brewed with a small French drip filter made of metal. The cup will contain quarter to half cup of sweetened condensed milk depending on the personal preference. The coffee will seem to be oily as the oil in the beans is being cooked out during the roasting process. Dark roast coffees are originated from Europe and being brought to Vietnam during the French colonial period. French Catholic priest introduced Ca Phe Da to the Vietnamese society in the 1850’s. Therefore, Ca Phe Da combined Vietnam grown coffee with French drip filter and form this interesting brewery.

Alley John had made some changes to the Ca Phe Da, they changed the name to Dik Dik Vietnam Coffee which mean dripping coffee in mandarin. Other than the original Vietnam grown beans, Alley John also added Hazelnut Coffee beans and Mocha Coffee bean to the menu so that customers has more choices.

Crepes

Dessert Crapes (Rolled)

Dessert Crapes (Plate)

Savory Crapes

Crape is derived from the French word Cpe, it as a type of pancake that is very thin and made from wheat flour or buckwheat flour.
It is consumed in many parts of Europe, especially France, Belgium, and Quebec. Crapes have verity of filing range from plain sugar to fruits and meats. The French crape mainly is being divided into two categories that are dessert crapes and savory crapes. The fillings for
dessert crapes are something sweet such as Nutella spread, fruit and honey, while savory crapes are filled with meat products
We highly recommend for the dessert crapes
such as Nutella special as it is filled with cake,
ice cream and Nutella, the taste of happiness.
On the other hand, the savory crape could be
the substitute for lunch or dinner as it is filled with
a roll-full of salads and meat product depending on your choice.

Feedback by the existing customers:

They sell Japanese crepes and Dik Dik coffee here. The crepe was different from what we normally consume. I was expecting a crunchy crepe but this was super soft, the texture was something like pancake but thinner. Tried something new and surprisingly I liked it. I only wish they would buy sweeter

strawberries though because it was very sour. They were

quite generous in the amount of fruits though.

ii. For the Spaghetti Bolognese in the Alley Johns, I can taste a medium balance of meat and tomato flavor. The sweetness of the tomato is counterbalanced with sauce. I enjoy a ticklish liquid to coat the meat. The veggies which I was concerned about added a lot to the sauce which was a pleasant surprise. I loved the fresh herbs sprinkled throughout the spaghetti and I thoroughly enjoyed its presence in this sauce. What I loved most about it was that it tasted so fresh.

iii. For the Peanut Butter Crepe with Chocolate Mint Ice

Cream, the crepe was ordered to be cut instead of being in a roll. The peanut butter in the crepe was very thick and you can even smell the aroma when they were brought it to us. Besides this, it was filled with crushed peanuts

and chocolate. The crepe itself was freshly made and warm.

It was served with mint ice cream. There are also,
other flavors of ice cream to choose such as vanilla, chocolate, and green tea. They gave a big scoop ice cream
and the flavors complimented very well with each other.

iv. For the Ice Blended Hazelnut Coffee with topped off with vanilla ice cream, the coffee was blended smoothly. Every sip did not have any unblended chunk of ice. Its taste was quite strong and was not diluted even after most of the ice melted. At the bottom of the frank was coffee jelly. The jelly was not very sweet and tasted had a strong coffee flavor. The drink was topped off with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Alternatively, you can choose other flavors

such as chocolate or chocolate mint ice cream.

v. The reviews from the customers

from Facebook users who visited the Alley JoHNs cafe.

Most of them rated in 4 stars out of 5 stars.

iv.  The special thing in Alley Johns is that customer can refer to the method to enjoy the crepe suggested by the stalls. Steps by steps

are being shown in the notice inside the stalls on the wall.

The Alley Johns made this notice so that they can ensure the customer aware of the purpose of the wrapper and

the customer can enjoy the delicious crepe. Customer may curious for this special food that only available

in Alley JoHNs in Kampar, Perak.

vi. The most popular food in Alley JoHNs is the crepe where it can categorize into sweet and sour in the taste and categorized into serve as a plate or roll. It is famous in the Kampar because it is the ONLY one stalls who sell this special crepe

Moreover, the prices for the foods in this stall is affordable and is fresh made. Their crape, all is made by their own.

Group opinion and reason of selection
Well, the reason behind why we choose Alley John for this blog is that this is an interesting shop to stud how E-Commerce affects the business. The shop has a verity of the menu; its specialty is the French and Japanese Crape, and Alley John receives good feedback from the customers. Moreover, Crape is a special food in Kampar whereby Alley Johns is the ONLY one stalls sold these goods. Therefore, UTAR or TARUC students always visited the shops to enjoy the special crape and the special drinks at the stalls. University students or young people nowadays prefer to enjoy their tea time at this type of food shops as Alley Johns providing a good and comfortable environment together with the special crape foods.

 Classification of EC
As Alley John is a shop selling food and beverages, naturally, it conducts its business in business-to-consumer (B2C) nature of transaction. B2C nature of transaction is a model that the business sells its good or services to individual (Farlex Incorporation, 2016). Alley John did not sell its good to other business. This shop did provide dine-in service and take-away service.

Alley John operates under the concept of click-and-mortar. Click-and-mortar means that the business includes both physical and online means to conduct the business ("Click-And-Mortar", n.d.). Click-and-Mortar retailers combine both the traditional retailing techniques and the online transaction website to create more opportunities for their business. Alley John has a physical store at Bandar Baru located in Kampar and a Facebook page, which stated above. However, Alley John did not provide online transaction service for its customers. The Facebook page is merely for information sharing and keeping the customers updated regarding the latest menu.

 Business Model
The value proposition for Alley John is just moderate, as they did not utilize online media to derive higher returns. The value proposition is how the businesses segments the customers and create a way to attract the customers (Strategyzer AG, 2014). Alley John segmented its customers into person who has sweet tooth and the person who does not. For the segment for customers with sweet tooth, Alley John provided a variety of crapes with sweet flavors, such as honey, Nutella and red beans. On the other hand, for market segment without sweet tooth, Alley John offers the savory crapes that are filled with salads, sausages or ham. The weaknesses for Alley John in their value proposition are that they did not utilize their Facebook page to promote the shop. They did not constantly update the page on the latest information and post about the promotions.

The revenue model practiced by Alley John is the Viral Marketing (Rouse, n.d.)Viral marketing is a method of product promotion that relies on getting customers by word-of-mouth advertising through e-mail and social networks. Alley John’s customer source is highly base on the word of mouth of their existing customers. Based on our research, Alley John did not pay any attention in advertising the shop. The shop owner told us that they did not sponsor any recent activities organized by other institution or putting up advertising in the newspaper. The banner of Alley John was not sighted around the town, which lead us to believe that Alley John did not make a significant effort in marketing the business. As mentioned above, even though Alley John did own a Facebook page, but they did not active in managing it. Due to the limitation of the product sell by Alley John, it is not practical for them to practice other revenue model.

Basic approach used in marketing and advertising
In the past few years, Alley John did sponsor some of the activities organized by one of the society in University Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR). They also created a Facebook page to promote the shop. Nevertheless, this helped Alley John gained some reputations and businesses in the beginning of their operation period. However, the last Facebook posted by Alley John was on 6th April 2013, and there is no new post ever since. This might lead the viewers to think that Alley John had end the business.

 Recommendation:
In order to improve the business through e-commerce, Alley John should update their Facebook page frequently. So that their customers are able to gather information from the shop. Other than that, Alley John could also improve their marketing approaches such as putting up advertisement, banners or sponsoring activities organized by other institution or society. Even though it is difficult to practice other revenue models, but group purchasing seems to be a good way to improve Alley John’s business. The customer could pre-order meal at Alley John through the internet at a certain amount of purchase and Alley John could prepare and serve the food when the customers arrived at the shop. In addition, Alley John could also provide catering services that could make a reservation through the internet. Moreover, Alley John can invite some bloggers to their shops to try their foods and beverages. After trying the foods and beverages, the bloggers can write their review towards the shop in their own blogs. Therefore, it may attract many people to Alley John.

~ Short History of the dishes ~

The dumplings are said to be invented by Zhang Zhongjing. He created a soup made with mutton, spicy red peppers, and warming medical herbs wrapped in dough skin. It was made in the shape of an ear. This dish continued to spread to other parts of Asia such as Taiwan and Korea. The fried version is called quotie, which is filled with minced meat and finely chopped vegetables all wrapped in a piece thin piece of dough skin. They are placed on a flat pan and steamed. After this, they are fried with oil after the water has evaporated.

Lastly they are sprinkled with sesame seeds when they are full cooked. The two choices of fillings, cabbage or chives and are both mixed with meat. Korean kimchi and black vinegar are served on the side to compliment the dumplings. If the dumplings are not going to be eaten immediately, you can request for the kimchi and back vinegar to be packed separately from the dumplings.

~ Customer's Feedback ~
There are two flavor of fried dumpling, which are chive dumpling and cabbage dumpling. I prefer chive dumpling. I feel that chive dumpling prepared by aunty is very special that nowhere else can be found. The combination of chive and kimchi, together with a layer of black vinegar make the dumpling more delicious. Enjoyed it when it is hot best suit its taste. This is also the gentle reminder of aunty that keep on mention after customer bought it.

Both the fillings of cabbage and chives were chosen. The aroma of the Korean kimchi and the black vinegar was quite strong and could be smelled even before opening the box. The chive filled dumplings gave a strong chive flavor, while the cabbage filled one gave a blander taste. On the other hand, the cabbage dumpling complimented with the kimchi better than the chive dumplings. The kimchi was packed with flavor and was not very spicy despite looking quite red. Both dumplings go very well with the black vinegar.

The chive dumpling is the most I liked; this is because the minced meat and the chive wrapped inside the dumpling make the texture of the dumpling smooth, and the dough skin of dumpling are very crispy. Then, the dumpling eats together with kimchi and black vinegar are very appetizer. So, no matter how much you eat you will not feel greasy. The seller of the dumpling is very nice and friendly, and the process of preparation the fried dumpling are normally took a few minute only.

~ Value Proposition ~

The fried dumpling consists of 2 flavor which are chive dumpling and cabbage dumpling. But, the most popular is chive dumpling. The most important is the price! Only RM1 for each dumpling! So the price is really reasonable for everyone! Especially for the UTARians and KTARians. It is because the major consumers are from them.

With a cheaper price we can enjoy distinctive flavor from Taiwan. The dumpling is prepared by fresh ingredients, so consumers can taste a pleasant dumpling every day. The dumplings were topped with a layer of black vinegar, accompanied by homemade kimchi! It was such a special flavor that must tried! So, what are you waiting for?

Group opinion and reason of selection

The reason why we choose this dumpling stall for our blog is because it is unique. It is the only stall in Kampar that specializes in selling dumplings. While most dumplings are served with ginger slices and black vinegar on the side, this particular stall serves it their dumplings with Korean kimchi and black vinegar. As its business hours are not long, there might be many others who do know about it. The stall opens on weekdays from 11am until they the dumplings are sold out, which is around 2pm. During this time most people are either in attending classes or working. Since it does not have a name or any signs directing towards it, it may be harder to locate. During our visits some customers stood around the stall and it blocked the view of the stall. If someone was looking for the stall they might have missed it.

Classification of EC

The stall carries out the operation of selling dumplings, this shows it is a business. It conducts its business in business to customer (B2C) nature of transaction. The stall sells its product directly to the customers. There is no third party involved as it is a one way transaction.

The stall operates under the concept of Brick and Mortar. It is a street side business and the dumplings are being physically sold at the stall. The stall and its dumplings can be seen by everyone. This allows direct interaction with the customers. If the customers have any questions they can ask the stall operator directly and will be able to get an immediate answer.

Business model

The value proposition of Fried Dumpling is just normal as there was no Facebook page was created to promote their food. A value proposition is a promise of value to be acknowledged and a belief from the customer that value will be delivered and experienced. The revenue model practiced by Fried Dumpling is the Viral Marketing. Viral marketing is a marketing strategy that focuses on spreading information and opinions about a product or service from person to person, especially by using unconventional means such as the Internet or email. Typically, it is word-of-mouth advertising. The stall is only utilize the power of word of mouth to succeed in their business. The shop owner told us that she did not carried out any promotional activities such as distribute flyers, advertise through magazine, or even put a signboard to let people know about its existence. Hence, it proved to us that the stall success in their business without much hard work on advertising. Furthermore, I can see that almost every day there were lot of cars parking in front of the Fried Dumpling stall. It blocked the view from peoples. However, people still queue up to buy her food, they already know the location of the stall through the power of word of mouth. The number of customers keep on increasing as they spread the tastiness of the dumplings through their mouth to their relatives and friends. Curiosity of human make them have a try.

Basic approach used in
marketing and advertising

Fried Dumpling did not use any promotional activities in e-commerce world. The owner only use word of mouth to promote their business. Since the stall was located in new town which surrounded by many UTARians and KTARians, the power of word of mouth even stronger. After they tasted such a special and delicious foods, they definitely will share with their friends. So, more and more students will visit the stall as they believe their friends. Huge populations of UTARians and KTARians help boost the sale of Fried Dumpling. Some student even make use of the Fried Dumpling stall as their university assignment also. They create a blog to describe this stall. This indirectly let more people from the world know about Fried Dumpling.

~Recommendation~

Fried Dumpling stall can improve the business by using the social media, for example Facebook. Social media is a platform to increase the brand awareness because the internet users as a main ambassador for the food. Since that the owner is conducting a small food stall business, so by creating the Facebook page is a cost effective way to promote the fried dumpling.
Furthermore, Fried Dumpling stall also can applied the online advertising method to improve the business. A short viral video clip may include the characteristic and the process making of the dumpling, then share it through the media-sharing website. This can help the owner gains widespread popularity for the business.

The owner is the one who prepared the food by oneself. So, the sales of the fried dumpling are limited in the certain range although there are the high demand from the customer. Therefore, the method of group purchasing are highly recommend to improve the business. The customer may place their pre-order or reservation via the internet, so the owner could prepare the fried dumpling in advance.
